Swashbuckling

Swashbuckling

Imagine blades flashing as you leap over a tavern table, exchange a razor-sharp quip, then swing from a chandelier to grab a secret letter. One moment you are duelling at dawn on a misty quay, the next you are skirmishing across rigging while cannon smoke billows. Masks, capes, and coded invitations at glittering balls. Dirty gold, briny decks, and hidden coves. A professional Game Master sets brisk scenes, lets stunts shine, and gives every character a chance to be daring, romantic, and a little bit reckless.

It thrives at the table because the action is clear and collaborative. Swashbuckling rewards bold declarations, teamwork, and witty banter, so everyone gets their moment in the spotlight without complex preparation. Beginners can easily join in with familiar tropes and straightforward goals. Families enjoy the playful tone, which can adjust the level of peril as needed. Company teams appreciate the trust-building that comes from catching a crewmate mid-swing and solving courtly messes together. Veterans value tactical duels, chase choreography, and the intrigue that simmers beneath the smiles.

Our Game Masters run it in rules-light narrative engines and pulpy action systems, or in familiar fantasy rules. Think 7th Sea for theatrical flourishes, Savage Worlds for fast-paced action, Fate Core for creative stunts, or D&D 5e for seafaring campaigns. You can explore gritty historical Europe, high-spirited romance, or eerie coastlines filled with curses and smugglers. Let us know the flavour you want, from quippy and light to earnest and dramatic. Common questions

How does swashbuckling differ from pirates or standard fantasy?

Swashbuckling prioritises style, speed, and showmanship. Pirate games typically remain on the ship, focusing on loot, mutiny, and naval threats. Swashbuckling, however, extends into salons, courts, and back alleys, featuring masked identities, public duels, and daring rescues. The danger feels cinematic, with stunts, disarms, and clever positioning taking precedence over grinding attrition. Reputation, romance, and oaths often share the spotlight with blades. If you prefer witty heroes balancing honour and mischief, rather than hard-bitten raiders, this is the right flavour.

Which game systems are best suited for this style?

7th Sea excels at flamboyant duels and dramatic raises. Savage Worlds keeps fights brisk and supports chases and quick hazards. Fate Core rewards inventive stunts and scene aspects. D&D 5e also works for swashbuckling with light tweaks, like chase rules, social intrigue, and agile builds. A professional Game Master will match the rules to your group’s comfort and can suggest pre-made adventures or custom capers. If you want to browse options, see the game systems list at our Game Masters’ game systems.

Is this a good fit for beginners or younger players?

Yes. The tropes are familiar and the goals are clear, so new players learn by doing. For younger groups, our Game Masters can keep peril light, fade out on gore, play duels to first blood, and handle romance as comic or off-screen. They explain the rules at the table and spotlight creative ideas over deep mechanics. If you have tone or content limits, please share them in advance so the session can be tailored. To choose a facilitator whose style fits your group, browse GM playstyles.

What can I expect from a one-shot swashbuckling session?

A one-shot typically begins with action, then speeds through several exciting set pieces. Expect a blend of a heist or rescue, a chase across rooftops or through a market, a ballroom infiltration, and a climactic duel or scramble on a ship. The Game Master maintains a clear pace, introduces stunt options early, and ensures everyone has a chance to shine. You can use pre-generated characters for a quick start, or create quick builds. It usually concludes with a daring escape or a public reveal that wraps up the caper.

What players are saying

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a fantastic job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Cheers, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varied experience levels, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed for our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I organised a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is really passionate about it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was a fantastic GM who adapted seamlessly to our group and helped us make great progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided; they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were quite rough. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A great first experience with D&D. Amber was excellent at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating on attack strategies with my colleagues was a fun activity that provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.

    Triodos Bank N.V.

  • Pim is truly a legend as a DM! He's cheerful, adaptable, and incredibly experienced. With a group of novice players, he managed to create an amazing experience in just a few hours. He maintained control in a fun manner and engaged every player in the story, whether they were vocal or reserved. If you go adventuring with him, it will certainly be unforgettable!
