Monster Hunting

Monster Hunting

Monster hunting sessions transition from eerie clues to tough decisions and culminate in a fierce showdown. You converse with cautious townsfolk, examine clawed doorframes, and sift through tracks. You research what can harm the beast, brew bait or bombs, then choose the battleground for the fight. A professional Game Master layers the mystery and informs you of what your senses detect. The lair buzzes with danger. The battle is swift, tactical, and personal. When it concludes, you understand precisely how your strategy saved lives.

At the table, it flows smoothly because objectives are clear and scenes maintain a good pace. Scout, prepare, strike. It rewards teamwork and assigns every player a role, from tracking and lore to crafting and control. Beginners appreciate the structure and satisfying victories. Mixed groups and team events benefit from the emphasis on communication and planning. Veterans enjoy challenging foes that test tactics and resource management. Combat feels significant because your preparation counts, not just your dice.

Most hunts thrive in Dungeons & Dragons, where monsters possess rich lore and exploitable weaknesses. Our Game Masters also conduct monster hunting in Monster of the Week, The Witcher TRPG, or Pathfinder. You can browse game systems our Game Masters run if you have a preferred choice. The tone is adaptable. Gritty survival with scars and limited tools. Dark folklore and creeping dread. Bright, heroic battles that resemble boss fights. Inform your Game Master of your desires, and the hunt will align with them.

Common questions

How does monster hunting differ from traditional dungeon crawls?

Monster hunting centres on a specific threat you choose to confront, rather than navigating a maze room by room. You collect clues, test hypotheses, and strategise on where and how to engage. Setting traps, selecting terrain, and exploiting weaknesses are more crucial than mapping corridors or looting chests. The encounter resembles a boss battle with dynamic elements, and the groundwork you establish determines the intensity of the challenge. Travel and investigation scenes are significant, but they direct you towards a purposeful showdown instead of a lengthy crawl.

Which game systems are best for monster hunting, and how do they differ from one another?

Dungeons & Dragons excels if you’re after intricate tactics, detailed monster lore, and engaging resource management. Monster of the Week is rules-light and story-driven, ideal for clue-based hunts and quick pacing, featuring moves that highlight investigators and slayers. The Witcher TRPG focuses on alchemy, signs, and preparation as a central loop. Pathfinder provides detailed options and high-stakes combat for experienced tacticians. A professional Game Master can recommend a system that suits your group’s preferences and schedule. To compare options at a glance, check out the systems overview here: game systems.

Is this a good choice for beginners or a family-friendly group?

Yes. The hunt loop gives beginners a clear purpose and short, satisfying steps. A professional Game Master explains clues, sets DCs, and keeps choices focused so no one gets lost in the rules. A professional Game Master can provide pre-generated characters and simple gear cards. For kids, the tone can be adventurous rather than scary, with no gore and clear victories. Skill checks and monster mechanics can be simplified while keeping smart planning front and centre. Safety tools, including lines and veils, are used, so the group decides what is onscreen and what is not.

What can we expect from a one-shot hunt?

A one-shot typically runs a full loop in about 3 to 4 hours. You receive a hook, a few scenes to gather leads, a chance to prepare tools or bait, followed by a climactic battle in a location you influence. A professional Game Master ensures the key clue lands so the showdown occurs on time. Expect a concise arc with a resolved threat, rather than a cliffhanger. Roles emerge naturally, from tracker to lore expert to controller, ensuring everyone contributes. If you prefer more puzzles or more action, you can choose a GM style that suits you: GM playstyles.

What players are saying

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a fantastic job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Cheers, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varied experience levels, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed for our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I organised a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is really passionate about it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was a fantastic GM who adapted seamlessly to our group and helped us make great progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided; they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were quite rough. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A great first experience with D&D. Amber was excellent at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating on attack strategies with my colleagues was a fun activity that provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.

    Triodos Bank N.V.

  • Pim is truly a legend as a DM! He's cheerful, adaptable, and incredibly experienced. With a group of novice players, he managed to create an amazing experience in just a few hours. He maintained control in a fun manner and engaged every player in the story, whether they were vocal or reserved. If you go adventuring with him, it will certainly be unforgettable!
