Military

Military

Imagine a briefing room at dawn. A map on the table, scribbled orders, and call signs on a whiteboard. You choose the plan, assign fireteams, and cross the line of departure. A session might shift from careful reconnaissance to a firefight, then to triage and extraction, with radio chatter tying it all together. Between missions, you manage resupply, intel, promotions, and the weight of command. It’s about cohesion under stress, smart use of terrain, and achieving the objective when the situation changes.

Military games excel because everyone has a role and a clear objective. They reward teamwork, quick thinking, and attentive listening. They suit tactically minded groups, team events that seek cooperation under pressure, and veterans of RPGs who enjoy planning. Beginners also thrive, thanks to straightforward briefs and checklists. Families can opt for age-appropriate variations with fantasy units or rescue-focused missions. A professional Game Master sets expectations, employs safety tools for wartime themes, and maintains a tone that is focused and respectful.

Our Game Masters facilitate military play across various systems, from gritty to cinematic. Twilight: 2000 for survival and modern realism. Only War for Warhammer 40,000 squads. Savage Worlds, GURPS, Fate, or Genesys for flexible styles. D&D 5e for military fantasy. Lancer or the ALIEN RPG for sci-fi operations. Check out options on our game systems page. The tone can be adjusted to suit your group, from logistics and fog of war to heroic action with abstract ammunition, and from ground-level missions to command decisions.

Common questions

What distinguishes a military RPG from a combat-focused fantasy game?

Military play focuses on objectives, command structure, and coordinated roles. You plan routes, assign responsibilities, and manage communications and supplies. Contact is not the entirety of the session. Recon, breaching, overwatch, and extraction are just as important. Limited intelligence, rules of engagement, and collateral risk influence decisions. Consequences carry over through debriefs and changes in gear or status. Our Game Masters set up scenes to reward teamwork and timing, rather than just personal heroics, so smart positioning and clear orders are more effective than lone-wolf tactics.

Is this a good choice for beginners or for children?

Beginners thrive because missions are straightforward. A professional Game Master provides role cards, prebuilt characters, and concise procedures for movement, combat, and first aid. Complexity is introduced only when desired. For children or mixed-age groups, the focus can shift to patrols, rescues, and defence, with non-graphic descriptions and fantasy or sci-fi units if preferred. Safety tools such as lines and veils, along with mid-session check-ins, ensure content remains comfortable. Everyone has their turn and a role that matters.

Which systems are suitable, and how realistic can we make it?

Military stories work well in many systems. For gritty survival and modern detail, Twilight: 2000 stands out. Warhammer 40,000 squads utilise Only War. Lancer and the ALIEN RPG cover sci-fi operations. D&D 5e can handle military fantasy. Toolkit engines like Savage Worlds, GURPS, Fate, or Genesys allow us to cater to your preferences. Our Game Masters can implement strict ammo, suppression, and morale rules, or keep it cinematic with abstract gear. See examples on our game systems page and let us know the vibe you’re after.

What can we anticipate from a one-shot mission?

You will brief quickly, choose loadouts, and set a straightforward plan. Then the squad executes, adapting to contact as intel changes. Expect clear objectives, maps with relevant terrain, radio chatter for coordination, and a debrief to review what your choices achieved. Pregenerated characters keep things moving, and the GM adjusts difficulty to suit your table. Online sessions often utilise a virtual tabletop with tokens and measured ranges; see online play platforms. In person, you might use printed maps or quick sketches.

What players are saying

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a fantastic job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Cheers, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varied experience levels, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed for our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I organised a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is really passionate about it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was a fantastic GM who adapted seamlessly to our group and helped us make great progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided; they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were quite rough. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A great first experience with D&D. Amber was excellent at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating on attack strategies with my colleagues was a fun activity that provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.

    Triodos Bank N.V.

  • Pim is truly a legend as a DM! He's cheerful, adaptable, and incredibly experienced. With a group of novice players, he managed to create an amazing experience in just a few hours. He maintained control in a fun manner and engaged every player in the story, whether they were vocal or reserved. If you go adventuring with him, it will certainly be unforgettable!
