Vampire: The Masquerade
Vampire: The Masquerade places you in the modern night as a newly dead predator blending in with humans. The Masquerade protects your secret. Hunger gnaws at every decision. Sessions feel like midnight dramas, part political intrigue, part personal horror. You trade favours, make oaths, break them when necessary, and deal with the consequences. Conversations crackle, secrets emerge, and the city itself becomes a character. Expect tense scenes, moral dilemmas, and moments of dark style that make you feel both powerful and trapped.
A professional Game Master constructs your city, rivals, and impossible deals around your coterie. They tailor content for your group, from tragic romance to gritty crime, from subtle horror to bold action. It works well for newcomers and returning fans alike. Ideal for small groups, birthdays, and team nights that prioritise story over combat. We employ clear safety tools and tone check-ins to ensure the drama remains enjoyable for adults. Meet our Game Masters to create a night that suits your table.
How to play Vampire: The Masquerade
You describe what your vampire does, the Game Master sets the stakes, then you roll a pool of ten-sided dice based on your traits and skills. Count successes against a target, and the story progresses. Special Hunger dice add risk, turning wins messy or pushing you toward a loss of control. Most scenes resolve through conversation, stealth, or quick bursts of action, with consequences that resonate through the night.
You bring a character concept with desires and boundaries you do not want crossed, along with a willingness to scheme and improvise. The Game Master introduces the city’s factions, threats, and opportunities, maintaining tone and safety. They manage rules, pacing, and NPCs, allowing you to focus on choices and relationships.
In a one-shot, expect a tight story, like a heist, a court hearing, or a territory dispute, with quick-start characters available if you prefer. In a campaign, your coterie builds influence over many nights, feeds carefully, and engages in the long game of politics and ambition. The mood can lean dramatic, gritty, or action-oriented. Common questions
Do I need to know the rules or the lore first?
Not at all. A professional Game Master will teach you the essentials in a few minutes and handle the maths at the table. Vampire uses pools of ten-sided dice; you describe your intent, roll, and see what complications arise. You only need a character idea and any lines you want respected. Quick-start characters are ready if you prefer to jump in, or you can build one together. If you are new to the setting, the GM introduces clans, factions, and city politics through play so nothing feels overwhelming.
Which edition can we play, V5, V20, or an earlier version?
Most of our Game Masters run V5 by default, with Hunger dice and streamlined skills. Many can also run V20 or Revised on request, keeping classic disciplines and the older botch rules. Let the GM know what you want to revisit, from Humanity focus to Paths of Enlightenment, and any house rules you enjoy. You can browse Game Masters and choose someone who supports your preferred edition here: find a professional Game Master.
How dark is the content, and what are the safety considerations?
Vampire deals with predation, manipulation, and violence, so sessions are intended for adults. Before play, the GM establishes clear boundaries using tools like lines and veils, calibration, and check-ins. Themes you wish to avoid will be excluded or managed off-screen. Sexual violence is strictly off-limits. Feeding can be presented discreetly or resolved mechanically. You have control over how graphic the game becomes, ranging from moody drama to gritty crime. The GM keeps a safety tool visible during play and concludes with a brief debrief so everyone leaves feeling positive.
What group size and session length are most effective?
Vampire shines with 3 to 5 players, but 2 to 6 works as well. Plan for 3 to 4 hours per session. This includes a quick safety check, recaps, and a short debrief. Smaller groups provide more spotlight and tighter plots. With 5 to 6 players, the GM structures scenes to maintain pace and ensure everyone has meaningful choices. One-shots focus on a single crisis, while campaigns build your coterie’s influence over time and revisit consequences from earlier nights.
How is Vampire different from D&D?
It centres on social manoeuvring and personal horror rather than tactical combat. Most conflicts are resolved through conversation, stealth, or quick, risky actions. Combat is infrequent and perilous, so threats are often managed with leverage or secrets. You roll pools of dice for attributes plus skills, not just a single d20. Progress revolves around relationships, territory, and debts rather than loot. You operate as a coterie with shared objectives while concealing your nature from mortals and rival vampires. The tension arises from hunger and secrecy.
Can you run this online with mood and handouts?
Yes. Online play is seamless for Vampire. Our Game Masters utilise video chat, shared character sheets, handouts, and curated music to create the right atmosphere. Most scenes are run in a theatre-of-the-mind style, with simple maps used only when necessary. Safety tools are tailored for online play with clear signals. You can see the supported options here: online play platforms. If cameras aren't an option, audio will suffice, and the GM will adjust pacing and cues to ensure everyone remains engaged.
