Shadowdark

Shadowdark TTRPG · Shadowdark Roleplaying Game

Shadowdark

Shadowdark captures the essence of classic dungeon delving, then refines it to a brisk, modern pace. The world is pitch-black beyond your torchlight. Monsters are ravenous, treasure is alluring, and every decision carries weight. Sessions progress quickly, danger feels tangible, and clever ideas are just as important as your stats. If you’re after gritty fantasy where exploration, survival, and loot drive the narrative, this is a solid choice for your table.

At the table, you explore a ruin room by room, examine peculiar statues, negotiate with desperate creatures, and decide how far to push your luck before the light fades. A professional Game Master sets the atmosphere, keeps rules unobtrusive, and focuses on your strategies. It caters to both newcomers and seasoned players, works well for one-shots, birthdays, or team events, and runs smoothly in person or online. Browse our Game Masters to get started.

How to play Shadowdark

You roll a d20 when the outcome is uncertain. Meet or beat a target number to succeed. Attacks, spellcasting, and ability checks work the same way. Advantage or disadvantage uses two d20, keeping the higher or lower. Light, time, and gear are tracked, so torches, rations, and risk matter. On your turn, you describe what you do. The Game Master calls for rolls if needed, then shares the results and the new choices ahead.

Players bring curiosity, a simple character, and a desire to explore. At a table, dice and a pencil are enough. Online, you only need voice chat and a stable connection. Our Game Masters provide the dungeon, monsters, treasure, and rulings that keep things moving. One-shots target a clear goal and wrap up in one night. Campaigns add downtime, wilderness travel, rival factions, and lasting consequences. See online options at online play platforms.

Common questions

Do I need D&D or OSR experience to play?

No. Shadowdark is straightforward to learn, even if this is your first tabletop RPG. You describe what your character attempts, then roll a d20 when the outcome is uncertain. The rules are consistent, so you learn through experience. A professional Game Master explains what’s important, manages edge cases, and keeps you engaged in the adventure. Mixed groups of newcomers and veterans work well together. If you prefer someone who teaches gently or gradually increases the challenge, check out our Game Masters at available GMs.

How is Shadowdark different from D&D 5E?

It emphasises exploration and risk. The mechanics are streamlined, allowing turns to move quickly and choices to feel immediate. Characters begin simply, with classic roles like fighter, rogue, cleric, and wizard. Light and time pressure influence your plans, and resting is not always safe. Fights are shorter and more unpredictable, with clever tactics often triumphing over brute force. Treasure and discoveries propel progress more than lengthy ability lists. If you enjoy tense explorations, tricky navigation, and planning your escape, this will feel quite different from 5E.

How perilous is it, and will my character meet their end?

Danger is part of the fun, but it’s not random cruelty. Threats are clearly indicated, and careful play is crucial. Ask questions, test the environment, and avoid unnecessary fights. Retreat can be the wise choice. Combat is quick and can shift due to a poor decision, not just bad luck. If a character falls, creating a new one is quick, so no one is sidelined for long. A professional Game Master adjusts difficulty to your group’s comfort while keeping the stakes genuine.

What group size and session length are most effective?

Shadowdark shines with 3 to 5 players, though 2 to 6 works. Sessions of about 3 to 4 hours allow you to explore a dungeon, make plans, and decide when to return. Smaller groups play faster and more stealthily but feel more vulnerable. Larger tables bring more resources and support, though decision-making takes longer. A professional Game Master tailors the delve, adjusts encounters, and sets a clear goal that fits your booked time.

Is it suitable for kids, and what age groups does it cater to?

Yes, with the right tone. The game is tense and spooky by default, but a professional Game Master can emphasise wonder and puzzles over gore and fear. Many families find ages 10 and up a good fit, depending on your child’s comfort with fantasy peril. Rules are light, so first-time players can jump in quickly. If you want a gentler or grimmer style, you can choose a GM whose approach matches your group at GM playstyles.

How do light and dark influence the adventure?

In the depths below, your light source determines what you can see and how long you can remain safe. The Game Master monitors it in straightforward steps, ensuring you’re always aware when your supplies are dwindling. Shadows conceal dangers and creatures, while bright light may draw attention, prompting you to balance caution with speed. Deciding when to push forward, take a detour, or retreat becomes a key strategic choice, not merely a matter of aesthetics. This approach heightens tension without complicating the rules.

What players are saying

  • Tom was fantastic! He was really great with the kids and very patient with his explanations. It was a wonderful evening and definitely worth doing again! The kids asked the next day when we could do this again.

    Danny

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a fantastic job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Cheers, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varied experience levels, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed for our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I organised a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is really passionate about it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was a fantastic GM who adapted seamlessly to our group and helped us make great progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided; they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were quite rough. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A great first experience with D&D. Amber was excellent at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating on attack strategies with my colleagues was a fun activity that provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.
