Root: The Roleplaying Game
Root: The Roleplaying Game immerses you in the Woodland, a maze of clearings and competing powers. You play as vagabonds, resourceful wanderers who take on jobs, choose sides, and stir the pot. Expect tense negotiations, daring heists, and chases through leaf litter, all wrapped in the charm of talking animals with sharp ambitions. It is political without being dull, adventurous without straying from the woods. Every choice can reshape alliances, and a single favour or slight can send ripples across the map.
It is ideal for groups who enjoy social manoeuvring and clever strategies, with plenty of room for laughs. Beginners can dive in quickly, while veterans encounter layered consequences and faction drama. Perfect for birthdays or team events where collaboration is key. Work with a professional Game Master who adjusts the tone from cosy caper to edge-of-your-seat intrigue, and keeps the Woodland moving at your pace.
How to play Root: The Roleplaying Game
Play flows through conversation. When your action fits a move, you roll two six-sided dice and add a stat. On a 10 or higher, you achieve what you want without any complications. On a 7 to 9, you succeed but face a cost or a difficult choice. On a 6 or less, the Game Master introduces trouble. Scenes shift between stealth, quick talking, and chaotic scrambles as plans develop at the table.
Each player selects a vagabond playbook, such as Ranger, Scoundrel, or Tinker, which provides signature moves, drives, and useful gear. You bring a goal, a personality, and the risks you’re willing to take. A professional Game Master prepares a dynamic map of clearings, factions like the Marquise de Cat, Eyrie Dynasties, and Woodland Alliance, along with NPCs who have needs and leverage. They frame scenes, track heat and favours, and ensure consequences are fair. To match the tone you prefer, browse GM playstyles.
In a one-shot, expect a focused task in one area, quick character creation or pregens, and a clear start and finish within 3 to 4 hours. In a campaign, your reputation grows across the Woodland, faction control shifts with wars and deals, and your playbook evolves over many sessions. Both formats work seamlessly in person or online with simple dice, handouts, and a shared map.

Common questions
Do we need to know the Root board game first?
You don’t need any board game experience. A professional Game Master will quickly introduce you to the Woodland, the concept of clearings, and the major factions involved. You’ll create a vagabond with straightforward choices and dive into the story. If you’re familiar with the board game, you’ll recognise some names and the sensation of shifting control. The RPG focuses on personal jobs, favours, and tricky situations, rather than moving armies around a map, so newcomers will feel right at home.
How is Root different from D&D?
Root emphasises leverage and choice over tactical grids. You roll 2d6 to trigger story moves, then decide how to manage costs or complications. Fights are quick and risky, often a last resort, while negotiations, infiltrations, and clever escapes receive plenty of attention. There is minimal spell bookkeeping. Power comes from allies, gear, and timing. Progress is measured in reputation and favours rather than treasure hoards. If you're after dungeon tactics, consider other tabletop systems on our game systems overview.
Is Root suitable for kids or appropriate for mixed ages?
Yes. The world has conflict, but a professional Game Master can maintain an adventurous and gentle tone. Violence can occur off-screen, outcomes can be non-lethal, and problems can be resolved with tricks, bargains, or chases. Animal folk and clear motivations help younger players understand what is happening. For mixed age groups, the GM balances challenges so everyone can contribute. If you have content guidelines, please share them. You can also see how GMs adjust tone on our GM playstyles page.
What types of characters can we play?
You play a vagabond using a playbook, a focused set of moves and gear. Examples include Ranger, Scoundrel, and Tinker. You also choose your animal folk, such as fox, cat, or mouse, and define your drives and relationships. Creation is quick, allowing new players to get started swiftly. For one-shots, the GM can provide pre-generated characters. In campaigns, your playbook advances with new moves and perks as you make your mark on the Woodland’s politics and under-the-table economies.
What’s the balance between politics and combat in a session?
Expect plenty of chatter, negotiations, and strategic positioning, with sudden bursts of action when plans go awry. Root excels in intrigue, stealth, and swift escapes. Combat is quick and perilous, making your choices crucial. A skilled Game Master keeps faction interests active and monitors heat and debts, ensuring that decisions have consequences in future scenes. Before play, you can request more capers and diplomacy or more audacious scrambles. The system adjusts without needing extensive rule changes.
Does it work better as a one-off or a campaign?
Both formats are effective. A one-shot focuses on a single job with a clear objective and a limited number of locations, making it ideal for trying out the game or for a special event. A campaign allows your crew to build a reputation, earn allies and rivals, and observe the shifting control of factions over time. Your playbooks develop through advances and gear, and earlier decisions influence new opportunities. Sessions are paced to allow for planning, tense choices, and rewarding outcomes.
What group size is best for Root?
Root is designed for 3 to 4 players, allowing for stealth, conversation, and quick actions without overcrowding scenes. Two players create a close-knit duo, perfect for focused planning and character interactions. Five players can also work well, especially for larger missions that involve parallel tasks. A professional Game Master ensures everyone gets their moment in the spotlight and facilitates swift transitions, making sure all players are engaged. The moves engine promotes teamwork, and each playbook offers a unique perspective on missions and negotiations.
