City of Mist TTRPG · City of Mist Roleplaying Game

City of Mist

City of Mist is a modern noir featuring legends walking the streets. You play as ordinary people, channelling the power of myths and stories while trying to maintain your everyday life. Sessions feel like a stylish detective show, with tense interviews, clue-hunting, and sudden confrontations. Our Game Masters highlight your character motivations, build intricate cases, and pace the night like a season premiere, ensuring every reveal and twist hits home.

Ideal for newcomers seeking story-driven play, as well as veterans who enjoy investigation and roleplay. One-shots are perfect for birthdays and team events that focus on collaboration and problem-solving. Campaigns allow your group to explore the city’s factions and discover how your myths evolve. How to play City of Mist

At the table, you describe your actions and roll two six-sided dice when the fiction triggers a move. You add a power number based on helpful tags and subtract any weaknesses or statuses. On a 10 or more, you succeed cleanly. A 7 to 9 is a success with a cost. A 6 or less gives the Game Master room to complicate things. Moves like Investigate, Convince, or Go Toe to Toe drive scenes, creating clues, statuses, and new leads to chase.

You bring a character concept tied to a legend, along with goals, relationships, and curiosity. The Game Master provides a living city, case files with suspects and factions, and clear stakes. A one-shot focuses on a tight case with pre-made or quick-build characters for a complete story in one night. A campaign follows your crew’s growth and the tension between normal life and myth, featuring recurring threats and downtime. See different GM playstyles to suit your group.

Common questions

Do I need to know the rules to play City of Mist?

No prior rules are needed. A professional Game Master will teach the basics at the table. You describe what you do, roll two dice when a move applies, count helpful tags to set your Power, and note any weaknesses or statuses that affect you. Results guide what happens next. Character creation uses guided "themebooks," so a few prompts turn your idea into useful tags and a weakness for each theme. For one-shots, you can use pre-made characters or quick builds. Most groups feel comfortable within the first scene.

How is City of Mist different from D&D?

There are no classes or hit points. Your character has mythic and everyday “themes” with tags you invoke to influence rolls. Harm and conditions are tracked as flexible statuses like injured-2 or terrified-3. Clues are a resource you earn by investigating, then spend to ask targeted questions. Fights are cinematic, focusing on positioning and consequences rather than grids and damage calculations. Advancement reflects your identity shifting over time, replacing themes as your myth deepens or your everyday life takes hold. The tone leans towards modern mystery and drama, not dungeon crawling.

What group size and session length are most effective?

City of Mist shines with 3 to 5 players, allowing everyone time to investigate, question suspects, and share the spotlight. Two players also work well for a buddy-cop vibe. A one-shot typically runs for 3 to 4 hours for a complete case with a clear conclusion. Campaigns often pace at one case every 2 to 3 sessions of similar length. For corporate events, a focused 3-hour format keeps the energy high. You can browse available Game Masters to see exact session offerings and recommendations.

How do mythic powers and themes actually work?

Each character balances Mythos themes, which channel a specific legend, and Logos themes, which reflect your everyday life. Every theme provides useful tags and one weakness tag. When you take action, you choose the move, total relevant tags to determine your Power, and roll. Weakness tags can diminish your effectiveness or introduce complications. Effects are tracked with statuses that can be physical, emotional, or social. You can draw on any source of myth, from Greek heroes to urban legends, whether literal or reimagined. Throughout a campaign, themes evolve as your identity changes.

Is City of Mist suitable for teens or a family group?

Yes, with the right tone. City of Mist delves into crime, temptation, and difficult choices, but a professional Game Master can adjust the content to suit your comfort level. For teens, a PG-13 vibe works well, focusing on mystery and heroism while using fade-to-black for more intense moments. For family groups with younger players, the GM can simplify cases, steer clear of frightening imagery, and keep consequences lighter while still offering exciting mythic powers. Before the game, the GM will discuss topics and safety preferences to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Can we play City of Mist online without any hassle?

It runs smoothly online. The game relies on conversation and shared notes more than maps, so video chat plus a simple virtual table or shared document is usually sufficient. Digital character sheets make tracking tags and statuses easy, and handouts manage clues and suspects. Many GMs provide specific tools on their profiles. If you are considering platforms, check common online play options and choose what suits your group’s comfort. Expect the same noir vibe and pacing you would experience at a physical table.

What players are saying

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a fantastic job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Cheers, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varied experience levels, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His positive attitude made the game enjoyable for all. I really appreciated how he could clearly explain what was needed for our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a fantastic time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thanks!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I organised a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is really passionate about it, and he was very pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • Baptiste was a fantastic GM who adapted seamlessly to our group and helped us make great progress in this one-shot. However, there was one issue with the character sheets provided; they were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were quite rough. For instance, our cleric was missing spells, including a healing spell, even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they’d ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach let the players immerse themselves in the game by giving them control over how they wanted their actions to unfold. I would definitely work with her again.

    John

  • A great first experience with D&D. Amber was excellent at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the flow and focus on the story. Collaborating on attack strategies with my colleagues was a fun activity that provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a very enjoyable session.

  • Pim is truly a legend as a DM! He's cheerful, adaptable, and incredibly experienced. With a group of novice players, he managed to create an amazing experience in just a few hours. He maintained control in a fun manner and engaged every player in the story, whether they were vocal or reserved. If you go adventuring with him, it will certainly be unforgettable!
